Band Played Waltzing Matilda - John Schumann and The Vagabond Crew[00:00:00]
Written by:Eric Bogle[00:00:00]
When I was a young man I carried my pack[00:00:09]
And I lived the free life of a rover[00:00:14]
From the Murrays green basin to the dusty outback[00:00:18]
I waltzed my Matilda all over[00:00:23]
Then in nineteen fifteen my country said Son[00:00:28]
It's time to stop rambling 'cause there's work to be done[00:00:32]
So they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun[00:00:37]
And they sent me away to the war[00:00:42]
And the band played Waltzing Matilda[00:00:47]
As we sailed away from the quay[00:00:51]
And amidst all the tears and the shouts and the cheers[00:00:56]
We sailed off to Gallipoli[00:01:00]
How well I remember that terrible day[00:01:13]
How the blood stained the sand and the water[00:01:18]
And how in that hell that they called Suvla Bay[00:01:22]
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter[00:01:27]
Johnny Turk he was ready he primed himself well[00:01:32]
He chased us with bullets he rained us with shells[00:01:36]
And in five minutes flat he'd blown us all to hell[00:01:41]
Nearly blew us right back to Australia[00:01:46]
But the band played Waltzing Matilda[00:01:50]
As we stopped to bury our slain[00:01:55]
We buried ours and the Turks buried theirs[00:01:59]
Then we started all over again[00:02:05]
Now those that were left well we tried to survive[00:02:17]
In a mad world of blood death and fire[00:02:21]
And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive[00:02:26]
But around me the corpses piled higher[00:02:31]
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over tit[00:02:36]
And when I woke up in my hospital bed[00:02:40]
And saw what it had done I wished I was dead[00:02:45]
Never knew there were worse things than dying[00:02:50]
For no more I'll go waltzing Matilda[00:02:54]
All around the green bush far and near[00:02:59]
For to hump tent and pegs a man needs two legs[00:03:04]
No more waltzing Matilda for me[00:03:08]
And now every April I sit on my porch[00:03:30]
And I watch the parade pass before me[00:03:35]
And I watch my old comrades how proudly they march[00:03:39]
Reliving old dreams of past glory[00:03:44]
And the old men march slowly all bent stiff and sore[00:03:49]
The forgotten heroes from a forgotten war[00:03:54]
And the young people ask What are they marching for[00:03:58]
And I ask myself the same question[00:04:03]
And the band plays Waltzing Matilda[00:04:07]
And the old men answer to the call[00:04:12]
But year after year their numbers get fewer[00:04:16]
Some day no one will march there at all[00:04:23]
