The Streets Of New York - The Wolfe Tones[00:00:00]
I was 18yrs old when[00:00:17]
I went down to Dublin with a fistful[00:00:19]
Of money and a cartload of dreams[00:00:22]
"Take your time" said me father[00:00:26]
Stop rushing like hell and remember[00:00:28]
All is not what it seems to be[00:00:31]
For there's fellas that would cut ye for[00:00:35]
The coat on yer back[00:00:38]
Or the watch that you got from your mother[00:00:39]
So take care me young bucko[00:00:43]
And mind yourself well and will ya give this[00:00:45]
Wee note to me brother[00:00:48]
At the time Uncle Benjy was a policeman in Brooklyn[00:00:51]
And me father the youngest looked after the farm[00:00:55]
When a phonecall from America said[00:01:00]
'Send the lad over'[00:01:02]
And the oul fella said 'Sure wouldn't do any harm' for[00:01:04]
I've spent my life working this dirty old ground[00:01:09]
For a few pints of porter and the smell of a pound[00:01:13]
Sure maybe there's something you'll learn or you'll see[00:01:18]
And you can bring it back home make it easy on me[00:01:21]
So I landed at Kennedy and a big yellow taxi[00:01:29]
Carried me and me bags through the streets and the rain[00:01:33]
Well me poor heart was thumpin around with excitement[00:01:38]
And I hardly even heard what the driver was sayin[00:01:42]
We came in the Shore Parkway to the faltlands of Brooklyn[00:01:47]
To my Uncle's apartment on the East 53rd[00:01:51]
I was feeling so happy I was humming a song[00:01:55]
And I sang "You're as free as a bird"[00:01:59]
Well to shorten the story what[00:02:03]
I found out that day was that[00:02:05]
Benjy was shot down in an uptown foray and[00:02:08]
While I was flying my way to New York[00:02:13]
Poor Benjy was lying in a cold city morgue [00:02:17]
Well I phoned up the old fella told him the news[00:02:22]
I could tell he could[00:02:26]
Hardly stand up in his shoes and he wept as he told me[00:02:27]
'Go ahead with the plans[00:02:32]
And not to forget be a proud Irish man'[00:02:34]
So I went to Nellies beside Fordham road and i started[00:02:41]
To learn about lifting the load[00:02:46]
But the heaviest thing that I carried that year[00:02:50]
Was the bittersweet thoughts of my hometown so dear[00:02:54]
I went home that December 'cause the oul fella died[00:02:59]
Had to borrow the money from Phil on the side[00:03:04]
And all the bright flowers and brass couldn't hide[00:03:08]
The poor wasted face of me father[00:03:12]
I sold up the oul farmyard for what[00:03:16]
It was worth and into my bag stuck[00:03:19]
A handful of earth then I boarded a train and[00:03:22]
I caught me a plane[00:03:27]
And I found meself back in the US again[00:03:29]
It's been 22yrs since[00:03:34]
I've set foot in Dublin[00:03:36]
Me kids know to use the correct knife and fork[00:03:39]
But I'll never forget the green grass and the rivers[00:03:45]
As I keep law and order in the streets of New York[00:03:49]
