Kilkelly - De Dannan/Jimmy Keane[00:00:00]
Kilkelly Ireland eighteen and sixty my dear and loving son John[00:00:05]
Your good friend the schoolmaster Pat McNamara's so good[00:00:15]
As to write these words down[00:00:21]
Your brothers have all gone to find work in England[00:00:25]
House is so empty and sad[00:00:31]
Crop of potatoes is sorely infected[00:00:36]
A third to a half of them bad[00:00:41]
And your sister Brigid and Patrick O'Donnell[00:00:46]
Going to be married in June[00:00:52]
Mother says not to work on the railroad[00:00:57]
It sure to come on home soon[00:01:02]
Kilkelly Ireland 18 and 70 my dear and loving son John[00:01:12]
Hello to your Mrs and to your 4 children[00:01:22]
May they grow healthy and strong[00:01:28]
Michael has got in a wee bit of trouble[00:01:33]
I guess that he never will learn[00:01:38]
Because of the dampness there's no turf to speak of[00:01:44]
And now we have nothing to burn[00:01:49]
And Brigid is happy you named a child for her[00:01:55]
And now she's got six of her own[00:02:00]
You say you found work but you don't say[00:02:06]
What kind or when you will be coming home[00:02:10]
Kilkelly Ireland eighteen and eighty dear Michael and John my sons[00:02:39]
I'm sorry to give you the very sad news[00:02:49]
That your dear old mother has gone[00:02:54]
We buried her down at the church in Kilkelly[00:02:59]
Your brothers and Brigid were there[00:03:05]
You don't have to worry she died very quickly[00:03:10]
Remember her in your prayers[00:03:15]
And it's so good to hear that Michael's returning[00:03:21]
With money he's sure to buy land[00:03:26]
For the crop has been poor and the people[00:03:32]
Are selling at any price that they can[00:03:36]
Kilkelly Ireland 18 and 90 my dear and loving son John[00:04:04]
I guess that I must be close on to eighty[00:04:14]
It's thirty years since you're gone[00:04:20]
Because of all of the money you send me[00:04:25]
I'm still living out on my own[00:04:30]
Michael has built himself a fine house[00:04:36]
And Brigid's daughters have grown[00:04:41]
Thank you for sending your family picture[00:04:47]
They're lovely young women and men[00:04:52]
You say that you might even come for a visit[00:04:57]
What joy to see you again[00:05:03]
Kilkelly Ireland 18 and 92 my dear brother John[00:05:12]
I'm sorry that I didn't write sooner to[00:05:23]
Tell you that father passed on[00:05:27]
He was living with brigid she says he was cheerful[00:05:34]
And healthy right down to the end[00:05:39]
Ah you should have seen him play with[00:05:44]
The grandchildren of Pat McNamara your friend[00:05:48]
And we buried him alongside of mother[00:05:55]
Down at the Kilkelly churchyard[00:06:01]
He was a strong and a feisty old man[00:06:06]
Considering his life was so hard[00:06:12]
And it's funny the way he kept talking about you[00:06:17]
He called for you in the end[00:06:23]
Oh why don't you think about coming to visit[00:06:29]
We'd all love to see you again[00:06:34]
