Joe McDonnell

Joe McDonnell - The Wolfe Tones[00:00:00]

O me name is Joe McDonnell[00:00:08]

From Belfast town I came[00:00:13]

That city I will[00:00:17]

Never see again[00:00:19]

For in the town of Belfast[00:00:26]

I spent many happy days[00:00:30]

I love that town in oh so many ways[00:00:35]

For it's there I spent my childhood[00:00:44]

And found for me a wife[00:00:48]

I then set out to make[00:00:53]

For her a life[00:00:56]

But all my young ambitions[00:01:01]

Met with bitterness and hate[00:01:06]

I soon found myself inside a prison gate[00:01:10]

And you dare to call me a terrorist[00:01:19]

While you looked down your gun[00:01:24]

When I think of all the deeds[00:01:28]

That you had done[00:01:31]

You had plundered many nations[00:01:37]

Divided many lands[00:01:42]

You had terrorised their peoples[00:01:45]

You ruled with an iron hand[00:01:50]

And you brought[00:01:54]

This reign of terror to my land[00:01:56]

Through those many months internment[00:02:03]

In the Maidstone and the Maze[00:02:08]

I thought about my land[00:02:13]

Throughout those days[00:02:16]

Why my country was divided[00:02:21]

Why I was now in jail[00:02:26]

Imprisoned without crime or without trial[00:02:31]

And though I love my country[00:02:39]

I am not a bitter man[00:02:44]

I've seen cruelty[00:02:48]

And injustice at first hand[00:02:50]

So then one fateful morning[00:02:57]

I shook bold freedom's hand[00:03:01]

For right or wrong[00:03:06]

I'd try to free my land[00:03:08]

And you dare to call me a terrorist[00:03:15]

While you looked down your gun[00:03:19]

When I think of all the deeds[00:03:23]

That you had done[00:03:27]

You had plundered many nations[00:03:32]

Divided many lands[00:03:37]

You had terrorised their peoples[00:03:41]

You ruled with an iron hand[00:03:46]

And you brought[00:03:50]

This reign of terror to my land[00:03:51]

Then one cold October morning[00:03:59]

Trapped in a lion's den[00:04:04]

I found myself in prison once again[00:04:08]

I was committed to the H-blocks[00:04:17]

For fourteen years or more[00:04:22]

On the Blanket the conditions they were poor[00:04:26]

Then a hunger strike[00:04:34]

We did commence for the dignity of man[00:04:37]

But it seemed to me[00:04:43]

That no one gave a damn[00:04:46]

But now I'm a saddened man[00:04:53]

I've watched my comrades die[00:04:57]

If only people cared or wondered why[00:05:02]

And you dare to call me a terrorist[00:05:10]

While you looked down your gun[00:05:15]

When I think of all the deeds[00:05:19]

That you had done[00:05:23]

You had plundered many nations[00:05:28]

Divided many lands[00:05:33]

You had terrorised their peoples[00:05:37]

You ruled with an iron hand[00:05:41]

And you brought[00:05:45]

This reign of terror to my land[00:05:47]

May God shine on you Bobby Sands[00:05:55]

For the courage you have shown[00:05:59]

May your glory[00:06:03]

And your fame be widely known[00:06:06]

And Francis Hughes[00:06:12]

And Ray McCreesh who died unselfishly[00:06:15]

And Patsy O Hara[00:06:22]

And the next in line is me[00:06:24]

And those who lie behind me[00:06:30]

May you're courage be the same[00:06:35]

And I pray to God[00:06:39]

My life is not in vain[00:06:41]

Ah but sad[00:06:48]

And bitter was the year of 1981[00:06:49]

For everything I've lost and nothing's won[00:06:57]
