Free to Soar [00:00:16]
One windy spring day, [00:00:19]
I observed young people having fun [00:00:21]
using the wind to fly their kites. [00:00:24]
Multicolored creations of varying shapes and sizes [00:00:27]
filled the skies like beautiful birds [00:00:31]
darting and dancing in [00:00:34]
the heady atmosphere above the earth. [00:00:36]
As the strong winds gusted against the kites, [00:00:39]
a string kept them in check. [00:00:42]
Instead of blowing away with the wind, [00:00:46]
they arose against it to achieve great heights. [00:00:49]
They shook and pulled, [00:00:53]
but the restraining string [00:00:55]
and the cumbersome tail kept them in tow, [00:00:57]
facing upward and against the wind. [00:01:00]
As the kites struggled [00:01:03]
and trembled against the string, [00:01:05]
they seemed to say, [00:01:07]
"Let me go! Let me go! I want to be free!" [00:01:09]
They soared beautifully even [00:01:14]
as they fought the imposed [00:01:16]
restriction of the string. [00:01:18]
Finally, one of the kites succeeded [00:01:20]
in breaking loose. [00:01:23]
"Free at last," it seemed to say. [00:01:25]
"Free to fly with the wind." [00:01:28]
Yet freedom from restraint simply put it [00:01:31]
at the mercy of an unsympathetic breeze. [00:01:35]
It fluttered ungracefully to the ground [00:01:38]
and landed in a tangled mass of weeds [00:01:41]
and string against a dead bush. [00:01:45]
"Free at last" [00:01:47]
free to lie powerless in the dirt, [00:01:49]
to be blown helplessly along the ground, [00:01:52]
and to lodge lifeless against [00:01:55]
the first obstruction. [00:01:57]
How much like kites we sometimes are. [00:01:59]
The Lord gives us adversity and restrictions, [00:02:03]
rules to follow from which [00:02:07]
we can grow and gain strength. [00:02:09]
Restraint is a necessary counterpart [00:02:12]
to the winds of opposition. [00:02:15]
Some of us tug at the rules so hard [00:02:17]
that we never soar to [00:02:20]
reach the heights we might have obtained. [00:02:22]
We keep part of the commandment [00:02:25]
and never rise high enough [00:02:27]
to get our tails off the ground. [00:02:29]
Let us each rise to the great heights [00:02:32]
God has in store for us, [00:02:35]
recognizing that some of the restraints [00:02:37]
that we may chafe under [00:02:40]
are actually the steadying force [00:02:42]
that helps us ascend and achieve. [00:02:45]
