Mad Jack's Cockatoo (1997 Digital Remaster) - Slim Dusty[00:00:00]
There's a man that went out, in the flood time and drought[00:00:04]
By the banks of the outer Barcoo,[00:00:08]
They called him "Mad Jack", 'cos the swag on his back,[00:00:12]
Was the perch for an old cockatoo.[00:00:16]
By towns near and far and shed, shanty and bar[00:00:20]
Came the arms of Mad Jack and his bird[00:00:24]
And this tale I relate, it was told by a mate[00:00:28]
Is just one of the many I've heard.[00:00:31]
Now Jack was a bloke who could drink, holy smoke![00:00:36]
He could swig twenty pots to my ten,[00:00:40]
And that old cockatoo it could sink quite a few[00:00:43]
And it drank with the rest of the men.[00:00:47]
One day when the heat was a thing hard to beat,[00:00:51]
Mad Jack and his old cockatoo,[00:00:55]
Came in from the west to the old "Swagman's Rest"[00:00:59]
And they ordered schooners for two.[00:01:03]
When these had gone down he pulled out half a crown[00:01:07]
And they drank 'til their money was spent,[00:01:11]
Then he pulled out a note from his old tattered old coat,[00:01:15]
And between them they drank every cent.[00:01:19]
Then that old cockatoo it swore red, black and blue,[00:01:23]
And it knocked all the mugs off the bar,[00:01:27]
Then it flew through the air and it pulled at the hair[00:01:31]
Of a chap who was drinking "Three Star",[00:01:34]
And it jerked out the pegs from the barrels and kegs,[00:01:38]
Knocked the bottles all down from the shelf,[00:01:42]
With a sound like a cheer it dived into the beer[00:01:46]
And it finished up drowning itself.[00:01:50]
When poor Jack awoke not a word then was spoke,[00:01:54]
But he cried like a lost husband's wife,[00:01:58]
And each falling tear made a flood with the beer,[00:02:02]
And the men had to swim for their life,[00:02:05]
Now poor Jack was drowned and when finally found,[00:02:09]
He was lying there stiffened and blue,[00:02:13]
And it's told far and wide that stretched out by his side,[00:02:17]
Was his track mate ..... the old cockatoo.[00:02:21]
