Sweeney (2004 Digital Remaster) - Slim Dusty (西林·得斯提)[00:00:00]
It was somewhere in September[00:00:03]
And the sun was goin' down[00:00:05]
When I came in search of coffee [00:00:08]
To a Darling River town[00:00:11]
Come-And-Have-A-Drink[00:00:15]
We'll call it 'tis a fitting name I think[00:00:16]
And 'twas raining for a wonder [00:00:20]
Up at Come-And-Have-A-Drink[00:00:23]
Underneath the pub verandah[00:00:27]
I was resting on a bunk[00:00:30]
When a stranger rose before me [00:00:33]
And he said that he was drunk[00:00:35]
He apologised for speaking [00:00:39]
There was no offence he swore[00:00:42]
But he somehow seemed to fancy[00:00:45]
That he'd seen my face before[00:00:47]
He agreed you can't remember[00:00:52]
All the chaps you chance to meet[00:00:54]
And he said his name was Sweeney [00:00:57]
People lived in Sussex Street[00:01:00]
He was camping in a stable [00:01:04]
That he swore that he was right[00:01:06]
Only for the blanky horses[00:01:09]
Walkin' over him all night[00:01:11]
He'd apparently been fighting [00:01:16]
For his face was black and blue[00:01:19]
And it looked as though[00:01:21]
The horses had been treading on him too[00:01:23]
But an honest genial twinkle[00:01:28]
In the eye that wasn't hurt[00:01:31]
Seemed to hint of something better [00:01:33]
Spite of drink and rags and dirt[00:01:36]
He was born in Parramatta[00:01:40]
And he said with humour grim[00:01:42]
That he'd like to see the city [00:01:45]
'ere the liquor finished him[00:01:48]
But he couldn't raise the money [00:01:52]
He was damned if he could think[00:01:55]
What the Government was doing here [00:01:57]
He offered me a drink[00:02:00]
I declined 'twas self-denial[00:02:04]
And I lectured him on booze[00:02:07]
Using all the hackneyed arguments[00:02:10]
That preachers mostly use[00:02:12]
Things I'd heard in temperance lectures [00:02:16]
I was young and rather green[00:02:19]
And I ended[00:02:22]
By referring to the man he might have been[00:02:23]
But he couldn't stay to argue [00:02:28]
For his beer was nearly gone[00:02:31]
He was glad he said to meet me [00:02:33]
And he'd see me later on[00:02:36]
But he guessed he'd have to go[00:02:40]
And get his bottle filled again[00:02:43]
And he gave a lurch[00:02:46]
And vanished in the darkness and the rain[00:02:47]
Now of afternoons in cities [00:02:54]
When the rain is on the land[00:02:56]
Visions come to me of Sweeney [00:02:59]
With his bottle in his hand[00:03:02]
