Poem in October - Dylan Thomas[00:00:00]
It was my thirtieth year to heaven[00:00:01]
Woke to my hearing from harbour[00:00:04]
And neighbour wood[00:00:06]
And the mussel pooled and the heron[00:00:07]
Priested shore[00:00:10]
The morning beckon[00:00:11]
With water praying and[00:00:12]
Call of seagull and rook[00:00:14]
And the knock of sailing boats[00:00:17]
On the net webbed wall[00:00:19]
Myself to set foot[00:00:20]
That second[00:00:22]
In the still sleeping town and set forth[00:00:23]
My birthday began with the water[00:00:29]
Birds and the birds of the[00:00:31]
Winged trees flying my name[00:00:33]
Above the farms and the white horses[00:00:35]
And I rose[00:00:38]
In rainy autumn[00:00:39]
And walked abroad in a shower of all my days[00:00:40]
High tide and the heron dived[00:00:45]
When I took the road[00:00:47]
Over the border[00:00:49]
And the gates[00:00:49]
Of the town closed as the town awoke[00:00:50]
A springful of larks in a rolling[00:00:55]
Cloud and the roadside bushe[00:00:57]
S brimming with whistling[00:00:59]
Blackbirds and the sun of October[00:01:01]
Summery[00:01:03]
On the hill's shoulder[00:01:04]
Here were fond climates[00:01:06]
And sweet singers suddenly[00:01:08]
Come in the morning[00:01:11]
Where I wandered and listened[00:01:12]
To the rain wringing[00:01:14]
Wind blow cold[00:01:16]
In the wood faraway under me[00:01:18]
Pale rain over the dwindling harbour[00:01:22]
And over the sea wet[00:01:24]
Church the size of a snail[00:01:26]
With its horns through mist and the castle[00:01:28]
Brown as owls[00:01:31]
But all the gardens[00:01:33]
Of spring and summer[00:01:35]
Were blooming in the tall tales[00:01:37]
Beyond the border[00:01:39]
And under the lark full cloud[00:01:41]
There could I marvel[00:01:44]
My birthday[00:01:46]
Away but the weather turned around[00:01:47]
It turned away from the blithe country[00:01:52]
And down the other air[00:01:55]
And the blue altered sky[00:01:56]
Streamed again a wonder of summer[00:01:58]
With apples[00:02:01]
Pears and red currants[00:02:03]
And I saw in the turning so clearly a child's[00:02:05]
Forgotten mornings[00:02:08]
When he walked with his mother[00:02:09]
Through the parables[00:02:11]
Of sun light[00:02:13]
And the legends of the green chapels[00:02:14]
And the twice told fields of infancy[00:02:17]
That his tears burned my cheeks[00:02:21]
And his heart moved in mine[00:02:24]
These were the woods the river and sea[00:02:28]
Where a boy[00:02:30]
In the listening[00:02:31]
Summertime of the dead[00:02:32]
Whispered the truth of his joy[00:02:34]
To the trees and the stones[00:02:36]
And the fish in the tide[00:02:38]
And the mystery[00:02:40]
Sang alive[00:02:41]
Still in the water and singingbirds[00:02:42]
And there could I marvel my birthday[00:02:48]
Away but the weather turned around[00:02:50]
And the true[00:02:54]
Joy of the long dead child sang burning[00:02:55]
In the sun[00:03:00]
It was my thirtieth[00:03:02]
Year to heaven stood there[00:03:04]
Then in the summer noon[00:03:06]
Though the town below lay leaved[00:03:07]
With October blood[00:03:10]
O may my heart's truth[00:03:12]
Still be sung[00:03:14]
On this high hill in a year's turning[00:03:17]
