The Raven

The Raven - Basil Rathbone/Edgar Allan Poe[00:00:00]

Once upon a midnight dreary [00:00:00]

While I pondered weak and weary [00:00:03]

Over many a quaint[00:00:06]

And curious volume of forgotten lore [00:00:07]

While I nodded [00:00:10]

Nearly napping [00:00:11]

Suddenly there came a tapping [00:00:13]

As of some one gently rapping [00:00:14]

Rapping at my chamber door [00:00:16]

"'Tis some visitor " I muttered[00:00:18]

"tapping at my chamber door[00:00:20]

Only this and nothing more "[00:00:22]

Ah distinctly I remember[00:00:25]

It was in the bleak December [00:00:29]

And each separate dying ember wrought[00:00:31]

It's ghost upon the floor [00:00:34]

Eagerly I wished the morrow[00:00:36]

Vainly I had sought to borrow[00:00:38]

From my books surcease of sorrow[00:00:40]

Sorrow for the lost Lenore[00:00:44]

For the rare and radiant maiden[00:00:47]

Whom the angels name Lenore-[00:00:49]

Nameless here for evermore [00:00:52]

And the silken sad [00:00:55]

Uncertain rustling of each purple curtain[00:00:56]

Thrilled me filled me[00:00:59]

With fantastic terrors never felt before;[00:01:01]

So that now to still the beating of my heart [00:01:04]

I stood repeating [00:01:06]

"'Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door[00:01:07]

Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door[00:01:10]

This it is and nothing more "[00:01:13]

Presently my soul grew stronger[00:01:16]

Hesitating then no longer [00:01:18]

"Sir " said I "or Madam [00:01:19]

Truly your forgiveness I implore;[00:01:22]

But the fact is I was napping [00:01:23]

And so gently you came rapping [00:01:25]

And so faintly you came tapping [00:01:26]

Tapping at my chamber door [00:01:28]

That I scarce was sure I heard you"[00:01:29]

Here I opened wide the door[00:01:31]

Darkness there and nothing more [00:01:35]

Deep into that darkness peering [00:01:39]

Long I stood there wondering fearing [00:01:41]

Doubting dreaming dreams no mortal[00:01:45]

Ever dared to dream before[00:01:47]

But the silence was unbroken [00:01:49]

And the stillness gave no token [00:01:53]

And the only word[00:01:56]

There spoken was the whispered word "Lenore"[00:01:57]

This I whispered [00:02:03]

And an echo murmured back the word "Lenore "-[00:02:05]

Merely this and nothing more [00:02:09]

Back into the chamber turning [00:02:12]

All my soul within me burning [00:02:13]

Soon again I heard a tapping[00:02:15]

Somewhat louder than before [00:02:17]

"Surely " said I "surely[00:02:19]

That is something at my window lattice:[00:02:21]

Let me see then [00:02:23]

What thereat is and this mystery explore-[00:02:23]

Let my heart be still a moment[00:02:25]

And this mystery explore;-[00:02:27]

'Tis the wind and nothing more"[00:02:28]

Open here I flung the shutter [00:02:30]

When with many a flirt and flutter [00:02:32]

In there stepped a stately Raven of[00:02:36]

The saintly days of yore;[00:02:39]

Not the least obeisance made he[00:02:41]

Not a minute stopped or stayed he;[00:02:43]

But with mien of lord or lady [00:02:45]

Perched above my chamber door-[00:02:48]

Perched upon a bust of Pallas[00:02:51]

Just above my chamber door[00:02:52]

Perched and sat and nothing more [00:02:55]

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling [00:03:00]

By the grave and stern decorum of[00:03:04]

The countenance it wore [00:03:05]

"Though thy crest be shorn and shaven [00:03:07]

Thou " I said "art sure no craven [00:03:10]

Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering[00:03:13]

From the Nightly shore-[00:03:15]

Tell me what thy lordly name is on[00:03:17]

The Night's Plutonian shore "[00:03:20]

Quoth the Raven "Nevermore "[00:03:22]

Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl[00:03:27]

To hear discourse so plainly [00:03:29]

Though its answer little meaning[00:03:32]

Little relevancy bore;[00:03:33]

For we cannot help agreeing[00:03:34]

That no living human being[00:03:37]

Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird[00:03:39]

Above his chamber door-[00:03:41]

Bird or beast upon the sculptured bust[00:03:43]

Above his chamber door [00:03:46]

With such name as "Nevermore "[00:03:48]

But the Raven [00:03:51]

Sitting lonely on the placid bust spoke only[00:03:52]

That one word as if his soul in[00:03:55]

That one word he did outpour [00:03:58]

Nothing further then he uttered[00:04:00]

Not a feather then he fluttered-[00:04:03]

Till I scarcely more than muttered [00:04:05]

"Other friends have flown before-[00:04:07]

On the morrow he will leave me [00:04:10]

As my hopes have flown before "[00:04:13]

Then the bird said "Nevermore "[00:04:16]

Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken [00:04:21]

"Doubtless " said I [00:04:24]

"what it utters is its only stock and store [00:04:25]

Caught from some unhappy master[00:04:29]

Whom unmerciful Disaster[00:04:33]

Followed fast and followed faster[00:04:35]

Till his songs one burden bore-[00:04:37]

Till the dirges of his Hope[00:04:39]

That melancholy burden bore[00:04:41]

Of 'Never- nevermore' "[00:04:42]

But the Raven still beguiling all my fancy into smiling [00:04:47]

Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird [00:04:50]

And bust and door;[00:04:53]

Then upon the velvet sinking [00:04:56]

I betook myself to linking[00:04:57]

Fancy unto fancy thinking[00:05:00]

What this ominous bird of yore[00:05:03]

What this grim ungainly ghastly [00:05:06]

Gaunt and ominous bird of yore[00:05:10]

Meant in croaking "Nevermore "[00:05:12]

This I sat engaged in guessing [00:05:17]

But no syllable expressing[00:05:18]

To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned[00:05:19]

Into my bosom's core;[00:05:22]

This and more I sat divining [00:05:24]

With my head at ease reclining[00:05:27]

On the cushion's velvet lining[00:05:30]

That the lamp-light gloated o'er [00:05:32]

But whose velvet violet lining[00:05:34]

With the lamp-light gloating o'er [00:05:36]

She shall press ah nevermore [00:05:38]

Then methought the air grew denser [00:05:43]

Perfumed from an unseen censer[00:05:47]

Swung by Seraphim[00:05:49]

Whose footfalls tinkled on the tufted floor [00:05:52]

"Wretch " I cried "thy God hath lent thee[00:05:55]

By these angels he hath sent thee[00:05:59]

Respite- respite and nepenthe [00:06:01]

From thy memories of Lenore [00:06:04]

Quaff oh quaff this kind nepenthe[00:06:06]

And forget this lost Lenore "[00:06:10]

Quoth the Raven "Nevermore "[00:06:14]

"Prophet " said I "thing of evil [00:06:18]

Prophet still if bird or devil [00:06:20]

Whether Tempter sent [00:06:22]

Or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore [00:06:23]

Desolate yet all undaunted [00:06:25]

On this desert land enchanted[00:06:26]

On this home by Horror haunted[00:06:28]

Tell me truly I implore[00:06:30]

Is there- is there balm in Gilead [00:06:32]

Tell me- tell me I implore "[00:06:34]

Quoth the Raven "Nevermore "[00:06:37]

"Prophet " said I "thing of evil [00:06:40]

Prophet still if bird or devil [00:06:43]

By that Heaven that bends above us[00:06:44]

By that God we both adore[00:06:46]

Tell this soul with sorrow laden if [00:06:48]

Within the distant Aidenn [00:06:51]

It shall clasp a sainted maiden[00:06:52]

Whom the angels name Lenore[00:06:54]

Clasp a rare and radiant maiden[00:06:56]

Whom the angels name Lenore "[00:06:59]

Quoth the Raven "Nevermore "[00:07:02]

"Be that word our sign in parting [00:07:05]

Bird or fiend " I shrieked upstarting[00:07:07]

"Get thee back into the tempest[00:07:09]

And the Night's Plutonian shore [00:07:11]

Leave no black plume as a token of[00:07:13]

That lie thy soul hath spoken [00:07:15]

Leave my loneliness unbroken [00:07:17]

Quit the bust above my door [00:07:18]

Take thy beak from out my heart [00:07:21]

And take thy form from off my door "[00:07:23]

Quoth the Raven "Nevermore "[00:07:27]

And the Raven never flitting [00:07:33]

Still is sitting still is sitting[00:07:37]

On the pallid bust of Pallas[00:07:40]

Just above my chamber door[00:07:42]

And his eyes have all the seeming[00:07:45]

Of a demon's that is dreaming [00:07:47]

And the lamp-light o'er him streaming[00:07:49]

Throws his shadow on the floor;[00:07:52]

And my soul from out that shadow[00:07:53]

That lies floating on the floor[00:07:57]

Shall be lifted- nevermore[00:08:00]
