Edward Benz 27 Times - La Dispute[00:00:01]
I heard the old man's voice break[00:00:10]
Stutter once then stop it I heard[00:00:12]
A sentence started confidently[00:00:14]
Halted by the sudden absence of a word[00:00:16]
Stumbled and he sputtered trying to find it back[00:00:19]
Something once so simple gone now[00:00:21]
When he finally gave up told me[00:00:23]
"Aw it's like hell getting old"[00:00:25]
When you came into the store[00:00:28]
Did you know you'd show me your scars [00:00:30]
I had a heavy heart[00:00:32]
He carried a door[00:00:34]
It's shattered pane all wrapped in plastic[00:00:36]
And he asked if I could fix it[00:00:39]
Come by a little later[00:00:41]
Help him put it back on hinges[00:00:42]
"See I'm far too old to lift it[00:00:45]
And it's not for my house it's my son's"[00:00:48]
When you opened up the door[00:00:51]
What is it you thought you'd find [00:00:53]
Nobody flinch[00:00:55]
Later I came by[00:00:58]
And backed into the driveway[00:01:00]
Got out to find him waiting there[00:01:02]
To lead me through the side yard[00:01:05]
To back behind the house[00:01:07]
Where the door frame stood empty and[00:01:09]
Helped me keep it steady[00:01:12]
While I hammered all the pins in[00:01:14]
Then later on the porch[00:01:16]
We somehow got to talking[00:01:19]
He told me of the house[00:01:21]
And how his son is schizophrenic[00:01:23]
So they purchased it for him[00:01:25]
The medication working[00:01:28]
And they figured it would help him fit in[00:01:30]
Help him lead a normal life[00:01:34]
But the pills made him sleep too much[00:01:36]
And he couldn't keep a job as a result[00:01:41]
So one day he just gave up on taking them[00:01:44]
And that day she had called you[00:01:49]
He'd locked her outside of the house[00:01:52]
How quickly did you get there [00:01:58]
And what were you thinking while walking up [00:02:03]
What fears flashed in front of you[00:02:07]
Taunted you walking to unlock the door [00:02:10]
I remember it Ed[00:02:31]
That story you told me[00:02:34]
Came back clear tonight[00:02:36]
Here while writing[00:02:39]
And you should know the feeling never left me[00:02:40]
The weight of my heart[00:02:44]
When you showed me the scars[00:02:45]
On your arms[00:02:48]
When I looked in your eyes[00:02:49]
And I heard what you'd said[00:02:51]
How you'd probably would've died[00:02:54]
Were it not for to care[00:02:56]
For your daughter and wife[00:02:59]
How he drove in the knife[00:03:01]
Still your son[00:03:03]
How you seemed to look through me[00:03:04]
To some old projector screen[00:03:07]
Playing back the scene as you[00:03:10]
Described it on a movie reel[00:03:12]
As real as the minute when it happened[00:03:14]
That memory moving behind me[00:03:18]
That moment that changed you for good[00:03:21]
And he drove to the house[00:03:24]
And pulled into the driveway[00:03:27]
Got out to his wife[00:03:29]
Waiting frantic[00:03:31]
She'd come by to check[00:03:33]
Found the pillbox was empty[00:03:35]
Went out to the pharmacy[00:03:37]
To fill up his prescription[00:03:40]
And came back to a locked door[00:03:42]
And could not get back in[00:03:44]
She'd knocked and she'd knocked[00:03:47]
But he wasn't responding[00:03:49]
Put the key into the lock[00:03:55]
And turned it[00:03:58]
Felt the bolt slide away[00:04:00]
Slowly open[00:04:03]
Went into the hall[00:04:05]
His son held a knife[00:04:08]
Standing off in the shadows[00:04:10]
Lunged forward and tackled him[00:04:13]
Stabbing him over and over[00:04:15]
And breaking that window[00:04:19]
He fled up the staircase[00:04:21]
The ambulance came[00:04:24]
Stitched and filled him with blood[00:04:26]
While the cops took his son[00:04:28]
With his wires so tangled[00:04:31]
His father was a stranger[00:04:33]
And I sit in my apartment[00:04:36]
I'm getting no answers[00:04:39]
I'm finding no peace[00:04:41]
No release from the anger[00:04:43]
I leave it at arms length[00:04:46]
I'm keeping my distance[00:04:49]
From hotels and Jesus[00:04:51]
And blood on the carpet[00:04:53]
I'm stomaching nothing[00:04:56]
I'm reaching for no one[00:04:58]
I'm leaving this city and[00:05:01]
I'm headed out to nowhere[00:05:04]
I carry your image[00:05:06]
Your grandfather's coffin[00:05:08]
And Ed if you hear me[00:05:10]
I think of you often[00:05:12]
That's all I can offer[00:05:15]
That's all that I know how to give[00:05:17]
