The tombstone told when she died [00:00:00]
Her two surnames stopped me still [00:00:04]
A virgin married at rest [00:00:07]
She married in this pouring place [00:00:11]
That I struck one day by luck [00:00:14]
Before I heard in my mother's side[00:00:17]
Or saw in the looking-glass shell[00:00:20]
The rain through her cold heart speak[00:00:23]
And the sun killed in her face [00:00:27]
More the thick stone cannot tell [00:00:31]
Before she lay on a stranger's bed[00:00:36]
With a hand plunged through her hair [00:00:39]
Or that rainy tongue beat back[00:00:42]
Through the devilish years[00:00:45]
And innocent deaths[00:00:47]
To the room of a secret child [00:00:49]
Among men later I heard it said[00:00:52]
She cried her white-dressed[00:00:56]
Limbs were bare[00:00:58]
And her red lips were kissed black [00:01:00]
She wept in her pain and made mouths [00:01:04]
Talked and tore though her eyes smiled [00:01:08]
I who saw in a hurried film[00:01:15]
Death and this mad heroine[00:01:18]
Meet once on a mortal wall[00:01:20]
Heard her speak through the chipped beak[00:01:23]
Of the stone bird guarding her:[00:01:26]
I died before bedtime came[00:01:30]
But my womb was bellowing[00:01:33]
And I felt with my bare fall[00:01:36]
A blazing red harsh head tear up[00:01:40]
And the dear floods of his hair [00:01:45]
